Copy Editing
Copy editing includes editing for clarity, consistency, redundancy, awkwardness, word choice, spelling, grammar, and punctuation. This does not include fact-checking but may include checking for internal consistency of facts and figures. It follows the requirements of a style guide or may involve creating a style sheet for the individual project. Copy editing sometimes overlaps with stylistic or line editing.
Proofreading
Proofreading is for materials that have already been edited and need a final pass for the mechanics of grammar, punctuation, spelling, and consistency. This includes adhering to the requirements of a style guide or style sheet.
